2009 Building Brooklyn Awards
This glamorous yet down to earth ninth annual event was a true winner!
Speaking of winners, the awards ceremony honored:
Mr. Richard Meier -Managing partner Richard Meier and Partners Architects LLP)
and
Ms. Joanne Oplustil- Executive Director of CAMBA
Each honoree has given back ten fold, to their Brooklyn communities at large.
Through grand architecture and grand fundraising for numerous community based
programs, they are prime examples of a "better brooklyn."
The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce also awarded several Brooklyn based firms,
banks, buildings and companies with plaques and recognition for their unique vision
and for their green building designs and functionalities.
Spaces such as Galapagos Art Space, on Main Street in DUMBO; The Brooklyn
Children's Museum; The Perry Buidling (yes located on Perry Street in the famous
Brooklyn Navy Yard) and 9 others were chosen this year.
The NYPD Brooklyn Tow Operations Building drew light laughter from the crowd
when it was announced as one of this year's winners for design and construction. I
can hear people's thoughts.."ahh now I know where my tow charge is going!"
Co- chaired by Chris Havens-Creative Real Estate Group LLC and Susan Dobin
Architect, PC and organized by Lori Raphael along with a completely committed
committee, the 2009 Building Brooklyn Awards was a total success!
Hundreds of Brooklyn chamber members and guests attended the annual awards,
held at the infamous Steiner Studios. Catered by Abigael Kirsh, the food is topic for
another article. Suffice to say, that I am no longer "petite" after eating so many
"petit fours!" Lamb, greek olives, Candied Almonds and Salmon Sliders were just
some of the unusual and gourmet dishes served.
The Brooklyn Chamber knows how to party and how to give back to its members
and to the community!
