The New York Optimist
I started taking pictures when I was 16 for a xerox anti fashion fanzine I was
self publishing called The Key. 28 years later it is still something that inspires me
and that i am driven to do on a daily basis, sometimes wandering around
aimlessly with my camera for hours, taking pictures of everything from random
street art to the multitude of crazy characters that inhabit NYC. I've always shot
fashion  and for a brief moment in the 90's I was THE up & coming young
buck, shooting for The Village Voice, Interview, Seventeen and too many more
to mention. I stopped shooting film in 1997 because I could no longer afford film
or my lab fees and figured that photography was something I had done and had
moved on from. In 2000 I got an internet job and they gave me one of the first
primitive digital cameras to shoot with. It was a bulky Sony Mavica and actually
used a floppy disc. 9 years and almost 300,000 photos later, I am happily
ensconced in the world of image obsession and visual distraction. I have had 3
shows since 2006. My first GET CHRISTY was a doll project in which I
restyled the same doll in 500 handmade miniature dresses and shot each one as if
they were a Russ Meyer super vixen seen through the lens of Avedon. My
second HOT CHILD IN THE CITY in 2007 was of all the kids I was meeting
working as a
Barista at a trendy coffee house in the EV. My last show was IN
COCK WE TRUST and featured shots of my boyfriend Will after a night of
excessive partying in Oakland Ca. cavorting in the nude in the backyard of a
punk rock squat house we were crashing in. I shoot allot of self portraits and
lately have been documenting all the amazing characters that inhabit the
performance art scene that is flourishing in downtown Manhattan and Bklyn. I
take pictures because I simply can't help myself from documenting everything I
see. I am visually obsessed and dream in photos. I wouldn't have it any other
way.
