The New York Optimist

The Mayor Of Dance Music

“Licky.” Kevin Graves may always be associated with this smash hit, and he
gladly wears it. When the legendary Larry Tee insisted that Kevin run his
record label after seeing his successes at Global Underground and Ray Roc's
ROCit Records, he gave his first assignment: find remixers for a fierce track
Larry had with Princess Superstar. He came up with drop-your-jaw mixes
from both Sébastien Léger and Hérve, creating THE runaway hit at the Winter
Music Conference that's had everyone from Justice and Erol Alkan to Pete
Tong and Judge Jules going ga-ga.

Not settling on a hit record, Kevin and Larry forged ahead to do the
unthinkable: create a yearly dance/electronic music festival in New York that
would re-brand the festival/conference for a new generation, AND bring the
UK & Europe back to the States. “Dance Music Invasion” did this and then
some, attracting the world's top artists at 12 clubs in 6 nights. Just a sampling
of the talent included Bloc Party, Arthur Baker, Loco Dice, Princess
Superstar, Louie Vega, Thomas Fehlman (of the Orb), The Glass, Andy
Caldwell, Serge Devant, Christopher Just, Blaze, Mel Merio, Honey Dijon, V.I.
P., Mr. V & Miss Patty, Alex Pearce, Sleepy & Boo, and Double Dutch Will
Take You Higher.

Kevin first got on the decks as a teenager in St. Louis, where he and his
brother Brian spun teen clubs and house parties. They drew a night with
unique music that the crowd flipped for, and were so passionate about
anything dance they just needed to share it. This early experience shows in
Kevin's sets today, wowing with technical genius & the choicest tunes that
“just draw an authentic response: exuberance, a too-cool head-nod, a strut, a
glare, a dance-off, intimacy, an escape.” It's something special to experience
him turn out any room, any crowd with his fussy yet diverse tastes. He's
helmed the decks with DJs Pete Tong, Fergie, and Hernan Cattáneo; he's
resided at the top clubs in New York including Cielo, Sullivan Room, Crobar,
Hiro and Spirit; he is THE breakout star on Fire Island; and when Madonna
called for a trusted DJ to spin her tour after-party, only Kevin would do.

In the studio Kevin has broken out with remixes for Scissor Sisters (with a
big thumbs-up from Jake Shears and the band), Tiger Stripes (No. 2 DJ Mag)
and Aubrey (No. 4 Billboard). He recently teamed up with Hybrid Heights to
bring their deep take on MTV's Logo favorites Matthew Duffy and Keo
Nozari, drawing huge praise from both underground and top talent alike.

With successes in every area of electronica, it's no wonder Kevin is dubbed
“The Mayor Of Dance Music.”
