Away from Home-Upstate New York - Ellie Robyns
The Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains are in a state of accelerated renewal. Considering most of the places listed are within 2 hours of NYC and work
with most any budget, you will have no excuse but to pamper yourself. Whether you go by car, take the Metro North railroad, or hop on your Harley, you will
find so much to do so close to home.
In today’s stressful times, it is good to know you can get away, if even for the day, to enjoy the splendor of the seasons.
Fall is my favorite time of year upstate New York. Watching the leaves change, picking a pumpkin or an apple..in the “big apple” Nothing like it!

YOU WANT A PLUSH ROOM AND A GREAT MASSAGE AS WELL AS SOME CHALLENGING HIKES?

From the road, the Copperhood Inn & Spa (Rte. 28, Shandaken; 845-688-2460) looks plain. Inside, it’s a lovely European-style inn and spa with beautiful
rooms overlooking the Esopus. The owner forages for fresh fruits and vegetables that her husband, the chef, uses in the tasty spa cuisine. There’s a great indoor
pool and sauna and yoga takes place in a sunny room with creek views.

PILE ON THE CHARM. PEACE AND QUIET, A COUPLES MASSAGE, AND MAYBE SOME SHOPPING.

Situated right on the Hudson River, the eighteenth-century Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa (220 North Rd., Milton; 845-795-1310) is just an hour and a half from
the city. The new spa (opening in June) will have a water-treatment room, and a saline pool.
Cost of a three-night stay: Starts at $725 per couple, including breakfast and a $50 gift certificate to nearby Woodbury Common (20 percent off during the week).

Catskill Mountains

People say the Catskills are not what they used to be. Even though many of the old hotels and hangouts are no longer filled with Borsht Belt
comedians and Kiamesha “Lakers, “ the region is still beautiful , pristine and being rebuilt.
Bethel Woods, home of the ORIGINAL Woodstock site, is now bursting with a full summer concert lineup and great fall family activities. Located in
Bethel, NY the Bethel woods museum is now open as well, and there are beautiful homes ready for purchase on the surrounding properties.
The Concord will be the Concord Entertainment Center, with their hugely renovated golf course, full resort amenities and gaming. I can still recall
the singles weekends there, where anything “that happened in the catskills, stayed in the catskills!”
COLD SPRING and BEACON, NY

Right on the Hudson River, Cold Spring, NY (Putnam County) and Beacon, NY
(Southern Dutchess County) offer endless amounts of arts and culture, river
tours, close proximity to NYC and much more.
A day trip to Cold Spring is a great idea by car or on your motorcycle as there
are quaint antique shops and a large variety of restaurants. In Beacon, NY you
will find more unique antiques, The Bannerman Island/Castle Tour
(
Bannermancastle.org), and the Second Saturday events. Log onto
www.cityofbeacon.org for event and town information.
Close by, off Route 9 is The FDR home and museum. There are tours and
historical re-enactments. Great for kids and adults alike. Nearby you will find the
Culinary Institute of America, where you can dine for lunch as our chefs of the
future prepare wonderful dishes for every palate.
Enjoy!
