& The Uncontrolled Substance

Nicolette Thain on Red Bubble

1) HOW DID PHOTOGRAPHY BECOME PART OF YOUR LIFE?
" I have always been an expressive and creative individual at a young age, through High school I took up Graphic Design and Writing, but
didn't quite find my outlet till some years later when I was visiting family in England, that was 7 years ago now, and I haven't looked back
since. I bought my first camera in England, it was only a 2 pixel digital camera, but I was fascinated by it and was vastly addicted to
photographing all sorts of objects and my surroundings".

2) DID YOU TAKE UP PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIES?
"I am not a big believer in schools or rules, I have been a self taught photographer all the way, and love learning as I go. Talent cant be bought
or taught, it all comes down to passion, practise and composition and the ability to accept constructive criticism when need be. My Auntie was
very encouraging of my work and my eye for detail, that she did push me a little to pursue it further. Once I Knew my way around my basic
digital camera, it was time to upgrade to a professional one, from there I also joined some online photography groups, to better understand
how to use a more advanced equipment".

3) FROM PASSION TO PROFESSION, HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?
"My first few years of photography, was really just self indulgence. But I was then approached gradually by a number of people who
appreciated my portrait works, and I then began to take on offers for private works, nothing advertised, really just word of mouth. It was fun
for a short time, but I then had to turn away from the money, demands and timelines, as I realised the pressure was taking away from my true
pleasure of photography, that once gave me that inspiration to begin with. It was a great feeling to just walk away from that, and finally
concentrate on what I wanted to do. I pushed the boundaries and stepped out of my comfort zone once again, to re-discover my personal
enjoyment and creativity for photography. I am glad I did as I have become so passionate about Night Photography, it really has been a break
through in my photography, my night shoots are now attracting allot of attention, to my fellow artist friends I'm known as the "Queen of Night
Shots", which is quite amusing and flattering".

4) SO WHERE TO FROM HERE?
"I have really enjoyed this journey so far and will continue to pursue my projects and passions, I'm amazed at the amount of attention the Night
Photography is attracting, and the buyers coming through, seeking to buy out my Melbourne City Night Shots, its been one of the highlights.  I
will know doubt continue to unravel my passions further with the Night Photography, it has created such demand, the City's of the World is
my next mission. So keep on the look out for them".

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE - JOURNAL (Passions & Life)
People have become controlled substances. Ponder for a moment....
Apparently it’s wrong to express freely, to do whatever you want to do, to go against the grain, to be different… WHY! Fantasies are the want
to do what we are conditioned not to do… Dreams are the spiritual creations our souls desire yet they are suppressed by the sensible and
censored… Religion loves to wave the big stick around using fear to control the masses and what are the followers fearful of? An unseen
blinding faith in WHAT!!! Faith in a way of life that has caused more wars, more senseless death and more misery than any other force
known to man. WAKE UP! FEEL! SENSE! INDULGE! just be honest with yourself and others… DO IT! Pursue your instinct, push your
boundaries… don’t look away when your eyes lock with that stranger, look at them, let the desire darken your eyes, throw the challenge on
the table… let that animal attraction out, feel it, show it, be it.

If it’s wrong to do, feel and experience so many things then why do we? We are like buildings that have windows and doors but your not
allowed to open certain ones… what is the point of a door or window that cannot be opened! It becomes a wall, it’s purpose forgotten. How
many times have you heard an adult say they miss being a child? Have you wondered what it is they actually miss? THE FREEDOM TO JUST
BE! To squeal with joy! to scream in anger, to throw themselves on the floor in disappointment, to cry with sadness, to laugh till their belly’s
hurt, to express and feel with abandonment! WHY do we cease expressing exactly how we feel in the way we want to… There are people out
there that are not conditioned to “tone it down”, they shout with Joy and express what they are feeling openly and freely. We like to label these
people extroverts! And of course we feel safe in our social bubble of acceptance, living by god knows who’s standards and rules. But at least
we will be invited to the next dinner party because we are a safe bet to seat next to the Smith’s and Jones’s.

We have all stopped ourselves at some point from doing what we instinctively want to do. You might have wanted to say something
and you have stopped yourself or edited the original version, why did you do that? Do you lack belief in yourself or are you trying to
play it by the rules? Would your words offend or actually make people stop and think… and maybe admire you! How often do you
find yourself in a group discussion and you do not agree with the general consensus… are you true to yourself or true to the group?

Have you admired an outrageous pair of shoes yet would never think of buying them let alone wearing them because, because, because… you
have been trained not to be different! Your on the stage of life, this is not a dress rehearsal!!! Get into it with passion! Do what makes YOU
happy, not everyone else but you. Laugh out load, scream with pleasure, dance like an idiot, FEEL FREE TO JUST BE! buy those crazy shoes
and WEAR them! Express yourself! Be an UNCONTROLLED SUBSTANCE!
