"Johnny Canto"
by Peter Ristucia
I'm clad in black, martini in hand, crooning behind the radiophone Dean
Martin style.
But the boys from the Bowery aren't buying it. They whip out their
automatics and spray the joint with bullets.
make a mad dash for the exit, martini still in hand, amid flying shards of glass
and screaming showgirls.
The Red Rocket is still hot in the alley.
Outside, the Rocket purrs like a giant cat. My man Shiny Carruthers is behind
the wheel.
"Bowery boys are right behind me! Dig those heels and grind them wheels,
Shiny!"
Shiny floors it and we peel out the alley behind Happy Harry's.
The boys from the Bowery burst out back, too slow, too late to catch me.
They rattle off some lead to let me know they're sorry to see me go.
"You got the package?" Shiny asks.
