Eva Rorandelli
Artist Statement
Looking towards mass media advertising, fashion, and the surplus
of images that surround us, my work investigates contemporary
perceptions of identity by questioning what is "real" as the world
becomes increasingly artificial due to technological advances and
the development of new moral and social infrastructures. Although
my paintings feature figures that are often larger than life and
appear frozen in awkward positions, they are not intended as
subjects in a traditional sense. Rather, they are merely spatial
elements of movement and stillness that extend from autonomous
living backgrounds. In this regard my work reflects a female
perception of reality; the figures' presences question the validity of
their role as subjects, their gaze questioning ours.
My paintings explore the relationship between imagination and
reality and critique the emphasis in today's society of appearance
over essence. The use of fashion as inspiration becomes merely an
act of remaking and revising previously successful object/symbols
celebrated by society—it is a way to emphasize the transformation
and metamorphosis of the era we live in. Playing with traditional
techniques and themes, and the contrast of collaged materials,
resins, and the chemical adhesion of pigment to cloth, the physical
nature of the textile becomes a hybrid form of chemical imbalance
that parallels the development of today's foundation-altering
technologies (such as nanorobotics and artificial life) and their
imminent implications for the fabric of human consciousness.
